While Ginsberg thought she was writing about made-up people in a made-up place, in the aftermath of finishing her first novel, she discovered how naive that viewpoint was, and why her blissful ignorance made for a better book. She will share how vulnerability forgest connections between readers and writeres, that it’s worth it to write the hard stuff, and that no writer or reader should feel as if their particular experience of the world isn’t interesting or valid. When Maggie Ginsberg’s debut novel, Still True, first came out, journalists, readers and booksellers kept calling it “such a Wisconsin book”—but she had no idea what that meant. Like all authors, she’d labored to evoke a vivid, specific sense of place—the fictional Driftless town of Anthem—but she wasn’t thinking about Wisconsin’s traits, she was just describing as accurately as she could this amalgam of the communities she’d lived and loved in all of her life. She wasn’t trying to make a statement about her home state’s drinking culture, she was pulling from personal experiences with alcohol and addiction. She wasn’t consciously writing about the elaborate push-pull of privacy and community that small town Wisconsin folks straddle, she was drawing from her experiences with marriage, estrangement, motherhood, secrecy, independence, and the “creative problem-solving” that comes with life in a fishbowl. Now she thinks about it all the time—what makes a “Wisconsin book,” and why does it matter?
