Overdue dispatches from last weekend: First time i Overdue dispatches from last weekend: First time in Maine, thanks to the generosity of artist bicycle foodie creative hilarious friends, and the indomitable adventurous spirit of @bikefarmer. Had to re-read Olive Kitteridge to set the mood, and got a surprising amount of writing done amid the curious squirrels, vulnerable talks and seasalt-swollen books. The weather mostly held, even the gentle rainy day that held me. Successfully navigated @marksirek’s handwritten treasure hunt to explore downtown Bath on foot, trending right out the dooryahd to find everything he promised and more. (Yarn! Trails! Pastries! Ships! Lighthouses! Lobster! Whoopie Pies!) Played writer-in-residence to @kateburgau’s artist-on-crutches, finally fangirling-in-person her recent work—and making wall space for her brilliant crows (using the excuse of Andy’s 15th soberversary, the gift that keeps on giving). Of course I got a little temporarily gloomy about all that ails us—I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t ruin it just a little bit with my ever-present existential angst and Midwestern guilt. Andy is just the right partner for me, this guy who matches my “but how could I possibly” with “why not you” every. single. time. Now we’re home and headed out in the rain to vote. You: Go vote. Go forth. The rain’s gonna come either way.
It would already be an incredible feat that @mfish It would already be an incredible feat that @mfishfry launched @lakecity.books three years ago to such resounding success—but to already be moving into a bigger, grander space, complete with wine bar and bookshelf ladder?? There’s so much to celebrate this weekend, and I hope you’ll join us for the three-day grand re-opening festivities. I’ll be there on Saturday night at 6pm to sign books with friend and fellow author @susannadaniel1975, whose latest novel is like reading your divorcee bestie’s perimenopausal lesbian diary—in other words, DIVINE. On Friday night you can get books signed by @christinaclancyauthor and @author.annelise.ryan, too! Plus ribbon cutting, raffles, merch sales, $5 taps, the works. Congratulations, Molly, and thank you for three years of fierce support!! 💙
I’m always so proud of @bikefarmer but I never saw I’m always so proud of @bikefarmer but I never saw this one coming. Such a strange, weirdly beautiful full circle moment. @madisonmagazine was such a big part of my life for so long, but I haven’t worked there in 18 months. The top-tier author of this cover story, @frank.bures, is the reason I even started writing for magazines in the first place back in 2006, when he taught the “Introduction to Freelance Writing” mini-course that changed the trajectory of my life. It’s wild to think about how Andy’s constantly shifting path—always forward, always innovative and creative—landed him in a cover story by Frank in a magazine that shaped my career. Maybe bicycles really are magic, just like he’s always saying. #hot #legs #jorts
I’m sitting here admiring my clutter for once inst I’m sitting here admiring my clutter for once instead of feeling overwhelmed by my unfinished to-do list. Isn’t it beautiful? Life happens until it doesn’t. It’s painful watching the sky fall on so many people I love, knowing I’m only safe for now because of where I happen to be standing. We keep moving anyway, try to stay brave—isn’t that beautiful, too? My default has always been yikes, I can’t do it, I’m not enough, but lately I’ve been practicing saying, “What if it all works out?” My best moments, my deepest connections, go undocumented: that intimate dinner with friends, those belly laughs between our kids. That’s okay. But I can also share moments of luck and light. Shed the Midwestern survivor’s guilt over feeling happy, remind myself that you don’t have to earn peace by suffering—who ever told us that? Why did I buy it for so long?Look how good it felt to get out in the woods after telling myself I didn’t have the time. Look at these trees swirling, whether I witnessed it or not! Listen to this gorgeous new music. Look at these miracle books other people wrote, and behold: every pair of always missing reading glasses. Look at this green scarf I may never finish knitting but dang, it’s gotten so much longer than it was, one stitch at a time. Look at this delicious avocado toast shared with besties of 40 years. Fine, look at the evidence of my procrastination in this obvious craft-book-purchasing problem—but is it? A problem, I mean? I like the messy desk, and improving by osmosis—who knows what makes the work better in the end. At least I’m making messes of things instead of my life—I can’t say that was always the case. My ongoing goal is to be less rigid about all of it—what I can’t, won’t, would; what I shouldn’t, should’ve, didn’t. Put on the headphones, make the books, brave the life. Say it with me: What if it all works out?
Gibby graduates today! I hope he will forgive me t Gibby graduates today! I hope he will forgive me this moment of mush. It’s been one of the great honors of my life to watch him grow up. He’s so good. 💙
When people ask me where I learned to write, I alw When people ask me where I learned to write, I always answer “from reading.” In other words, from other writers. Sometimes something wise comes flying out of my mouth and I get credit for it, but I know I had to have heard it on one of the zillions of interviews with other writers I’ve ingested over the years. In addition to editing other people’s work and attending readings, I’ve devoured thousands of hours of podcast interviews like @writersonwritingpodcast and @firstdraftadow —imagine my joy when I heard that one of the writers I admire most was creating a new Wisconsin-centric show? I have utmost faith in my dear friend @jeffoloizia, who’s said many wise things over the years that I’ve probably cribbed. Beyond honored to be one of his first guests, but even more excited to listen each Wednesday to everybody else. Jeff, thank you for making this space. Everybody else, go subscribe to @writingforward!
I woke up this Mother’s Day with my gaze drawn to I woke up this Mother’s Day with my gaze drawn to the strangest patch of light up in my loft. My first thought: angel cloud. I couldn’t make sense of it, even after I put my glasses on. Went up with my phone to inspect and, within moments, it was gone. Immediately I started missing mothers and pondering complicated mothers, all while feeling grateful for my own mom and the kids who made me one. It’s always everything at once, isn’t it? All three of my grandmothers had forms of dementia in the end, and I’ve been thinking and writing so much about memory these past few years; stolen, selective, avoided, revised. There is only today, and I’m so awed by it. Missing my girl, but she’s right where she’s supposed to be, and I’ve gotten to lay eyes on so many of my loves these last couple days. My cup runneth over, even then, always now.
Utterly thrilled to share news of my next book: DA Utterly thrilled to share news of my next book: DAISY CHAIN, currently slated for Fall 2027. Making a book still feels like magic to me; publishing, a miracle. I’m profoundly grateful to @mariawhelanlitagent at @mushensentertainment for her unshakable faith and dogged partnership, and for leading me to @blackstonepublishing and Marilyn Kretzer, who immediately met me inside this story. Grateful to @bikefarmer for the endless “what if” plot-walks, to my kids and parents for the pep talks, and to my writer friends who’ve counseled, commiserated and celebrated at every step—you’re not off the hook yet. Most of all I’m thankful for the librarians, booksellers and readers who’ve embraced STILL TRUE and have rooted for me ever since. You’ve given me a life I never dreamed possible, and I can’t wait to share this new story with you.
